How much money is appropriate to send to a inmate family member when they are about to get released?

Okay my cousin is in a prison.They send out like these money order slips so you can send them money. How much do people usually send? He is my cousin and we are close. I just don’t want to send to little. I’m OBVIOUSLY new at this. I just would like some input. I don’t know who else to ask and this is kind of personal so I really appreciate it.Thanks so much guys!
He does not owe restitution or punitive damages.
He has never been on drugs, or sold them. He has completely turned his life around. And all I can do is hope it stays that way when he gets out. But for now I want to help. To the people who are leaving mean answers-please stop. I haven’t done anything to deserve that.
He takes the money in his account and buys his own tooth paste, sneakers, and such!!!
He lives in another state. Very far away- sorry for adding all the details. I’m new to this “Yahoo Answers” thing. I love this site.

i think it very kind and forgiving of you God bless i n my opinion 100 if you can swing it would be appropriate to get some personal item that he may have missed or needed during his troubled days

There are several things to consider. #1 does the facility your cousin is being detained in have a limit on how much you can send? #2 Does your cousin owe restitution or punitive damages? If so, some of the funds you send can be taken to pay these. #3 If your cousin is in for drugs or because he did something stupid while intoxicated, you might not want to send him money you think he will go out and use with.
#4 does he have a place to live when he gets out or will he be needing money to get a place? If he is needing a place to live, obviously you would want to give him more to help him out.
The best thing to do is send him what you can EASILY afford to send and send him a letter telling hiim if he needs anything to give you a holler.

It would depend on what he was in jail for.If it were for drugs I wouldn’t send anything.When he gets home take him shopping.

Just the idea that you asking tells me your a very nice person. I would send only what I could afford at the time. I’m sure this person will be happy to get anything at all

their’s no need for you asked how much you can give to your cousin..if you have enough money then send them all so that your cousin will be happy while in jail because there you are showing support to him even when your part apart…any amount is irrelevant to this issue what makes it relevant is if you give it wholeheartedly not just because you want to show off to others..

I wouldnt send too much,,,dont make the trip any easier for this person,,,or they will never learn anything from their mistakes……..

That’s funny! You’re worried about the etiquette involved in sending a convict a few bucks when they get out of the slammer. I’m pretty sure you won’t offend anyone if you don’t send “enough”!!!!

Ask him how much money certain items are. They have a store in which they can make purchases from, also they can buy calling cards which vary in prices. Best is to ask him what the prices are. Also, you can buy him books or cassettes and have them sent to him, however, again contact him, because there are rules you have to follow. Like the books might have to be paperback, and they usually have to go through like a Barnes and Noble. You can physically send him anything. If you are looking for a specific number like 20-40 dollars is good. Inmates use the food they get to trade for other items, since they can’t physically have any cash. The most important thing for people when they are in there though are letters/pictures/visits. Hope this helps.
Also, whatever money that is left over in their account at time of release, they are given I believe in cash. When he is out, if you are concern on how to help him, maybe nice clothes and gas money and help him look for a job. he probably will have some sort of parole agreement where he has to pay money every month. It all depends on the case. You don’t want to baby him, but definitely give him a boost.
